To make my wind chimes I had to research three things: the type of metal, the length of the tubes, and the design. I started by looking up different wind chime designs to figure out what I wanted them to look like. When I looked at photos online I found designs that were a single horizontal chime, others that were a circular design. I wanted to make a unique design so I came up with a “Y” shape, like a propellor. I then looked up what type of metal makes the best sound for wind chimes and found out copper was the best because it didn’t just “CLANK!” but it made a nice ringing sound that lasted for a few seconds. Finally, I researched the length of the tubes and found that each length of copper tube made a different musical note. I decided on the following lengths:

  • 1 9/16”

  • 1 15/16”

  • 2 5/16”

  • 2 11/16”

  • 3 1/16”

  • 3 7/16”

Based on my unique preference I sketched a Y-shape for the basic structure with copper tubes hanging off it by small pieces of string. I approximated how far each copper tube would be from the other while hanging from the basic structure, and thought 3/4” would allow each tube to hang down without hitting themselves.
